And so I bought RoF and got it yesterday. I was eager to see what is all about and have to admit I like it very much. Not only it has very nice graphics, sound, effects, etc. but also it simply something new. After 9 years of Il2 it’s “refreshing”... I have flown 4 or 5 quick missions yesterday with a veteran AI and it was great! So be ready to see me online, most probably at the beginning of next week btw - any tips regarding engine management? is there any manual or something? Bof

haha!....good to have you on board!! best thing is to jump on vent and get to grips with it on our server. We run full real settings apart from engine warm up. Basics are tho....mixture...on full for start up....rads....full open if available.....throttle off and hit go When u get a little alt drop your mixture a bit....bit more as you get to higher alts. Best to learn with german planes as they do not require mixture. As for shooting things down...you will find even the smartest AI to be easy compared to the worst human pilot. ~These guys are uber-hot!! Good move tho....you wont regret it

Engine management is relatively simple, much easier than say an LA-5!!. Adjust the mixture to get the highest revs, reducing it gradually with altitude.
Open rads full for take off and climb, approx 50% for level flight (this is in an SE 5a which has a temp gauge..most german planes dont have a temp gauge!) and close it for long prolonged dives (your engine can be damaged by being to cold as much as too hot)
Revs are important, you can easily overrev some engines, especially in a dive...to be honest you need to learn each aircraft as they are different. If you are going vertically down back off the throttle! If you kill you engine and you have been hit by an enemy they will be credited with a kill, a little annoying but it stops the rampant kill stealing that used to occur.
Throttle: full power or around 90% most of the time. Rotary engined planes have 'blip' swtiches. Make sure this is assigned to a throttle or joystick button, its very, very usefyl Note: rotary engine planes do not have radiators.
A lot of the german planes have auto mixture whilst the Pfalz D XII and Fokker D VII F version have an 'altitude throttle'... better let someone online explain that one! (kind of lie a supercharger.
Anyhoo, easiest thing to do is join us online and on vent (vent settings have probably changed since you last flew with us) and we can explain all. I will try and get on from around 20:00 uk time.

Neeeeaaaaah, I don't know if it was a good idea to go back to online flying.... I had a great time yesterday (although in terms of my personal performance it was a total disaster ) but today all I'm doing instead of working is checking planes performance tables provided by Flashman (cheers for those btw). Good thing it's almost weekend!!! but seriously - good to hear your voices guys and good to be back. cheers!Bof

Glad the tables help. The DH2 is missing, but its the slowest in every respect anyway!

Didn’t want to open new thread so here it goes: So I bought RoF and wanted to “learn” it a bit. Therefore I’ve tried several servers, including the one for newbies, but the lag there was terrible so I put that one aside. I was using different nick name because I didn’t want to bring embarrassment to our squadron. I quickly found out that planes included in ‘box’ version can’t compete with for example Se5 or Fokker VIIF. So I bought Fokker Dr I (because it looks awesome), Pfalz XII (the most stable gun platform, I love it!), Se5 (fast, b&z’oomer, but my gun accuracy is around 5%) and Camel (because everyone was so excited about it). And honestly speaking that made a difference. My skills are still poor, but now I can shoot someone down from time to time and my k/d ratio is above 1 :-) Soon I will buy 2-3 additional planes. My question now is - you guys often fly Se5, what other planes do you use, so that I could join you in your thrilling adventures? Bof

HI Bofors,
I mainly fly SE 5a and Camel for Allies.... I keep away from the french crap unless I must!
As for German, I fly Dr 1 and DVII F. Others here like Pfalz DIII and ALB II is necessary for earlier maps. I actually have all the planes but the ones above are what I fly mostly.
Gunnery is harder in the SE 5a I would agree, still its worthwhile sticking to it in that plane, flown right the only real threat is DVII F (as its just as fast and can clib as well)
As for flying on newbie server without SYN tags, i wouldnt worry about that. I go on there sometimes as its good for practising.
As for the SE 5a, I have been working on squadron skins for us, starting with the SE 5a, which gives us a squadron marking along with an individual skin for each of us. See the other thread for details.
You should be at a level now where you shouldnt feel embarrassed by your tags or to join us, especially if your K/D ratio is above 1. None of us a uber aces, as just like in IL2, im sure you will be whipping us all pretty soon!
