But he left behind a little hardware to tide me over. ;D
I got a new CPU and a water cooler for it!
I was considering a whole new rig, but I'm glad I didn't. I got a Core2 Quad-Q9650 3Ghz(o.c. to 3.8Ghz atm) with 12MB L2 Cache to snap in my (getting a bit long in the tooth socket LGA775) Mother board and a Corsair H70 water cooler to keep it all from becoming a puddle of molten metal. The cooler is nice cause its a closed loop system, so no maintenance, and they say" no leaks".(hope they're right!) Once I got it all crammed in the case, not a hard install but a bit of a pain in the ass. I had to pull the MB out to mount a holding fixture on the back, which = pulling everything apart. Anyway, I got it back together, shielded my eyes and flipped the switch....No sparks....No flames...No smoke or steam...so far so good.
Booted RoF and gave it a whirl, and let me say, Oh My Fucking God, Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the answer to the riddle. Get a mother fucking Quad Core if you want this game to run!
I shudder to think how many times I sat here changing settings for hours, trying to get this program to run right. Now I can finally run it in my native rez(2560x1600) landscape on high as well as all the other bells and whistles. I can finally turn off that HDR stuff which I had on only because it ran better with it, I never really liked how it looked. But now its friggin beautiful, and so smooth. Maybe I'll be able to shoot something now! Right, don't go crazy! But I'm going to look pretty good going down in flames now.
So, in summery, if RoF is running like a "Big Bag O' Wank" for you...consider a CPU upgrade. IMHO better than a GPU, cause even if you have a good V-card, without a CPU it ain't gonna do squat. All I can say is, the difference is Night and DAY for me.
Mugue's Ride:
MB=ASUS P5N-D
CPU=Intel Core2 Quad 3Ghz w/12MB L2 cache oc 3.8Ghz (replaced E8600 Core2 Duo 3.33Ghz w/6MB L2 cache and stock cooler)
RAM=Patriot(PC2-6400) DDR2, 4x2GB sticks
GPU=2x EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 275,w/ 2GB DDR3 mem. in SLI
HD=Western Digital 10,000rpm veloceraptor or something
capacity: 1x120GB, 1x300GB
CD/DVD=Asus LightScribe DRW-2014L1T DVD+-R/RW drive
Sound= On Board 7.1 surround sound
PSU=Cooler Master,Real Power Pro (80plus), 750watts
Case =Cooler Master Centurion + 6x 120mm fans
OS=Windows XP64
Monitor=32" hp LP3065 (2560x1600) native rez
Corsair H70, CPU water cooler
Saitek: x52 stick and throttle with rudder peddles and a 3 axis throttle quadrant
TrackIR 3, running v4.whatever
Speakers=Logitech 45watt 7.1 system
And best of all it doubles as a 100% efficient space heater. Which is good cause its pretty cold here. (-11 F this morning and 2 feet of snow)
